Maritime Pilotage is one of the worlds’ oldest professions which is interesting and magnificent.

Maritime pilot's role is to assist the Master of a vessel during the ship's passage in the Istanbul Strait.

The pilot and pilotage services are sine qua non of safety (contributing to the overall safety) of navigation

for protection of life, property and environment not only in Istanbul, but also all around the world.

And the very subject of this photo book is to be a visualization of

Istanbul Straight pilots’ working process with all my respect.

 

It wasn’t like any other job that I experienced to see in my whole life. That’s why I impressed so much

and decided to create a visual medium for this labor group. It’s an extreme team work

which consists a land/station side and an action side over the sea.

 

This book has attempted to bring to light the difficulties faced in the pilotage during

48 hours shifts in Kadıköy, İstanbul. There is no other visual story telling sources

about Maritime Pilots all around the world. Especially in Turkey sources are so limited.

 

This photobook which is a voice of maritime pilotage in Istanbul Strait is the first of its kind,

hopefully it can give a meaning to their significant job.
